About the Mathagondapalli Education Center (MEC)
The Mathagondapalli Education Center (MEC) is the main project of Terre des Hommes-Netherlands in India and exists since 2000. It has the primary role to enable the partner NGOs to implement result-based development programs for children, families and communities for the poorest among the poor.
In the MEC, a model school has been opened with the objective to give education to 400 children from age of 8 to 15, coming from very under-privileged backgrounds – children from prostitutes, from prisoners, orphans… Educational models are developed to ensure need-based and customized training with clear objectives and outcomes and well-documented training materials. The 40 employed staff are being regularly trained to ensure they are becoming best in class teachers and trainers in a fast changing social and economic environment.
To ensure the best learning environment, the children are staying all year long in the school. House parents are employed to play the role of the parents during non-school hours. A lot of emphasis is placed in the curriculum on physical and artistic development, in this way children are helped to get out of their traumatized situation, learn team work and pleasant human relationship, and increase their self-confidence and their self-esteem. In addition, awareness is raised among children on critical health issues: air and water born diseases, communicable diseases, personal hygiene, physical and mental change in adolescent period, first aid, nutrition…
